Your Gut Is Your Second Brain. Here's What That Actually Means.

You've probably heard this phrase before: “your gut is your second brain” - it gets thrown around in wellness circles, usually without much explanation.
But I want to give you the proper version of this story, because the science behind it is remarkable, and understanding it might change how you think about both your mental health and your cognitive function entirely! So, this isn't a metaphor, as your gut has its own nervous system, its own intelligence, and quite a lot to say.

🧠 The nervous system you didn't know you had
Lining the walls of your gastrointestinal tract is a network of between 100 and 500 million nerve cells called the enteric nervous system. It is so complex and so independent that it can sense what is happening in your gut, process that information, and respond to it without any input from your brain at all. Basically, your gut has been making decisions without consulting you for your entire life, which might explain a few things!
But what gets really interesting is what happens when gut and brain do communicate, because they are in constant two-way conversation via the vagus nerve, the long cable running from your brainstem all the way down to your abdomen. This conversation has enormous implications for your mood, your anxiety levels, and your overall sense of wellbeing.
The serotonin story (and the bit most people miss)
Here is something that tends to stop people in their tracks. Approximately 90 to 95% of the body's serotonin is produced not in your brain, but in your gut (you can click here to read the study), in specialised cells in the gut lining.
Now, there is an important nuance: gut serotonin cannot directly cross the blood-brain barrier, so the two systems don't share the same supply. But gut-produced serotonin plays a very important role in signalling upward through the vagus nerve and regulating how much tryptophan - which is the raw material the brain needs to make its own serotonin - is available. The two systems are separate, but they are not independent of each other.
This is one of the reasons I get frustrated when gut health gets treated as a digestion issue and nothing more. It is so much more than that.
🦠 What your gut bacteria have to do with how you feel

Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria that produce neurotransmitters, regulate inflammation, and directly influence how your body and brain respond to stress and other stimuli. When that ecosystem is healthy and diverse, the signals travelling up to your brain broadly support calm, mood stability, and clear thinking. When it is imbalanced, a state called dysbiosis, those signals become problematic.
Importantly, research published in 2025 found that gut dysbiosis is a causative factor in depression and anxiety, not merely a consequence of them. For some people, the gut isn't just suffering alongside poor mental health or cognitive issues, it may be actively driving it, which puts a rather different spin on the phrase "trust your gut."
🍽️ What actually helps
The microbiome is super responsive to what you eat. Changes in diet can shift its composition within days, which makes food one of the most accessible tools you have for supporting both gut and brain health simultaneously.
Fibre is the foundation. Beneficial gut bacteria feed on prebiotic fibre from plants, and the fermentation of that fibre produces compounds called short-chain fatty acids that support the gut lining, reduce inflammation, and influence brain signalling. The American Gut Project found that people who ate 30 or more different plant foods per week had significantly more diverse microbiomes than those who ate fewer than 10, which sounds like a lot until you start counting herbs, spices, and wholegrains.
Fermented foods, live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso, add beneficial live bacteria directly. Oily fish twice a week provides omega-3 fatty acids that are anti-inflammatory and supportive of brain cell function.
Put all of that together and you are broadly eating a Mediterranean-style diet, which has some of the strongest research behind it for mental health of any dietary pattern currently studied.
Ultra-processed foods, refined sugar, and alcohol all work in the opposite direction. They reduce microbiome diversity and drive the kind of inflammation that underpins a lot of what we have been talking about here. Over time, a consistently poor diet is associated with a significantly higher risk of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
The bottom line
The gut-brain axis is not fringe science, it is one of the most active areas of research in neuroscience and psychiatry and also cognitive health right now. For some people, getting proper support for their gut is extremely transformative for their mental wellbeing and cognition, not because it replaces other forms of care, but because it addresses something that was driving the problem and had never been properly identified.
